Teaching people to see
(Source: Dorothea Lange)
I stumbled this week across this awesome site: ArtBabble (isn't the internet full of treasures?).
At the end of this clip, Dorothea Lange says, "The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera."
Isn't that beautiful?
Here's some of her photos & bio on the Google Art Project.
"Dorothea began as a professional portrait photographer in the early 1920s. The social calamity of the depression prodded her to leave the studio to document the nation's dispossessed [...] Lange had the uncanny ability to see people as both individuals and as representatives of types: to recognize the iconic in the ordinary."
It's amazing how a single image can tell a story.
