I LOVE the message in this comic. It just resurfaced on my twitter feed.
The person you were at age 18 does not need to be the same person you are at 25. You can continue to reinvent yourself -- to find new interests -- to change your mind.
This year, I've been really kicking my butt to try to find a creative outlet, learn new things & see what makes me happy. I'm on the verge of turning 30, and I am not: A) convinced I've found "it" yet (i.e., a passion, a calling, a career, whatever it is I'm searching for), B) ready to settle for something I'm just "okay at" or "not totally bored by."
Therefore, I've been trying a lot of things.
In the last month-ish, I've taken up:
- New role at Google (I'm basically a "YouTube storyteller")
- Coursera "Social Psychology" class (taking it virtually with my mom)
- Painting class at My Art Space (I just renewed my membership for round #2)
- Experimental videography class at Objectifs
- Acumen + IDEO Design Thinking course
- Photoshop class at Objectifs (starts next week)
- Pinhole camera workshop at Objectifs (starts next month)
- Modern Art Photography at Objectifs (starts next month)
- Plate Culture Host (first dinner party tomorrow night)
- Room to Read "Girl Rising" film screening volunteer
- Women's Media Network member
- SCUBA certification
- Code Academy - HTML section
- Running to work
It's a lot. I'm exhausted, and I don't have as much time to drink wine as I like ;)
But, it's also really good. I'm happier. I can feel my "self-efficacy" improving. And, I feel like I'm onto one of my "new lives" as the SMBC cartoon suggests.
When I get tired, I just remind myself of the Eames exhibit at the Art & Science museum.
"Genius? Nothing -- We just worked harder" - Charles Eames
