Cool Corporate Culture (and, I'm not talking about Google)

(Source: Paul Smith's office by David Baird)

When I think of corporate culture, I think about Google.  I'm biased.  I work there.  I know the culture inside and out.  The media reports on it all the time.  It makes work life so much better.

But, I do realize that Google's not the only unique culture out there.

Here's a few awesome ones I've stumbled upon recently:

Paul Smith
He has an office that would make any child jealous, but he also has a method behind his madness.

Smith says, "My whole life is about being childlike...which means that you have a lateral mind and you’re very curious...That’s why this room is just full of toys, beautiful books, strange objects, good fun things [from which] you can get great inspiration. Life is about living young, being youthful and enjoying yourself everyday."

The photos make me want to pack up & go home to play.

Buffer
Do you hate corporate politics?  Wish things were more "real" at your office?  Well, Buffer has taken it seriously with it's transparency policies.  Everyone knows exactly what everyone makes & their equity package.  Plus, they all wear jawbone bracelets to monitor sleep and work on self-improvement goals.  Neat!

They are also super honest with their customers (isn't that refreshing?)

SuperCell
SuperCell is the new Novia (creator of Angry Birds).  They make $2.4M per day on some of the highest quality mobile games on the market, Clash of Clans & Hay Day.  Unlike Zynga who was not judicious with their spending (and are now closing offices), they keep their perks to a minimum.  Instead they focus on Daniel Pink's 3 drivers of motivation.
  • Autonomy: They work in teams of 5 and have the power to create & innovate.
  • Mastery: They hire masters in the gaming field and allow them to focus on one thing
  • Sense of Purpose: They want to create the best games that will be around for decades, not just make a quick buck.
In addition, they are paid very well & have normal hours (an anomaly in start-up world)
